A Prayer for Peace
From Siddur Lev Shalem, a Jewish prayer book.
Dear readers,
The world is holding its breath as the negotiators between Israel and Gaza attempt to work out a lasting peace deal. But we can do more than hold our breath. We can appeal to the one who is the source of all peace. “Prayer availeth much.”
The following payer was sent to me by close friends who are in mutual ministry. I share it with you so it may stir the deep well of hope. We can join hands across denominational lines to demonstrate solidarity in support of those who negotiate peace.
This prayer was prayed in a time of prayer in the Yom Kippur morning Torah service on October 2nd, at Temple Beth El, a Conservative synagogue in Troy, NY. Rev. David Martin, pastor of Hope Methodist Church in Troy, prayed the prayer after the Yom Kippur morning prayers.
A PRAYER FOR PEACE
May we see the day when war and bloodshed cease, when a great peace will embrace the whole world.
Then nation will not threaten nation, and mankind will not again know war.
For all who live on the earth shall realize, we have not come into being to hate or to destroy.
We Have come into being to praise, to labor, and to love.
Compassionate God, bless the leaders of all nations with the power of compassion.
Fulfill the promise conveyed in scripture:
I will bring peace to the land, and you shall lie down and no one shall terrify you.
I will rid the land of vicious beasts and it shall not be ravaged by war.
Let love and justice flow like a mighty stream
Let peace filled the earth as the waters filled the sea.
And let us say: Amen.
